Fort Worth Zoo, Not Far From Villas of Oak Hill Apartments: Lions, Tigers and Bears are Just the Beginning

The Fort Worth Zoo has been around since 1909, making it the oldest zoo in all of Texas. Back when it first opened, however, the zoo looked a lot different. For one thing, its collection of resident animals was pretty paltry consisting of one lion, an alligator, two bear cubs, a coyote, a peacock, and a few rabbits. Today, the residents at Fort Worth Zoo number in the thousands, almost 7,000 to be more accurate.

And the zoo just continues to grow, debuting 16 new permanent exhibits in the past 20 years. There's the Chee-tos Cheetahs, where you can watch powerful felines run and prowl, as well as Parrot Paradise, a space where slightly smaller, colorful creatures flit from tree to tree. Don't miss a glimpse of the majestic lions, the waddling penguins, or the regal white tiger when you take a trip to the Fort Worth Zoo. If you grow tired of traipsing around, hop on the zoo's train back to the entrance on your way out. Make the short drive from Villas of Oak Hill Apartments to check it out.

Gaze Upon Michelangelo’s First Painting at Kimbell Art Museum near Villas of Oak Hill Apartments

You have Texas power couple Kay and Velma Kimbell to thank for the Kimbell Art Museum. In the early 20th century, he was a wealthy industrialist—he owned more than 70 companies—and she was his cultured wife, a woman who deeply enjoyed art. With his money and her artistic expertise, the couple started collecting works of art in the 1930s. Rubens, Caravaggio, and El Greco were among their favorite artists. Today, you can see the once-private collection on display at the Kimbell Art Museum near Villas of Oak Hill Apartments.

The museum debuted in 1972 in order to showcase the eclectic works gathered by the Kimbells. Well-known architect Louis I. Kahn designed the building, which is as much a work of art as the masterpieces housed therein. Ask one of the amiable, knowledgeable staff members to point you toward the Kimbell Art Museum's most illustrious works, The Torment of Saint Anthony. It's Michelangelo's first painting presented to the public, and you can see it at this local museum.
